Anthony Hecht's poems are often based off his experiences as a World War II soldier. A long-time poetry professor at the University of Rochester, the New York native published seven celebrated books of poetry which won several prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1968. After his death in 2004, Hecht was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Arts.
