Her novel, Bone, was a 1994 PEN/Faulkner Fiction finalist. Steer Toward Rock, supported by the Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Writers' Award and the Lannan Foundation, received a 2008 American Book Award.
