Frank Conroy was a director of the National Endowment of the Arts from 1982 to 1987 and director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop from 1987 to 2005. In addition to his successful novels and memoir (Stop-Time), he has also won a Grammy Award for his jazz piano playing and was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by France.
