Born in 1910, in Budapest, István Vas has been an editor at a publishing house since 1946. A two-volume edition of his collected poems, What does this Man Want? appeared in 1970, and his Self-Portrait from the Seventies, in 1975. Vas is considered to be one of the major poets alive in Hungary today.
