Robert Ivry's education began when he left school in 1978 and, on a whim, moved to New Orleans, where he shucked oysters on Bourbon Street. Raised in Wayne, New Jersey, he later formalized his studies at Michigan State University and the University of Iowa. He currently lives in Oakland, California, where he is a frequent contributor to The San Francisco Bay Guardian.
