Paulette Bates Alden is the author of a collection of short stories, Feeding the Eagles (Graywolf Press). She has recently completed a book-length memoir, A Reluctant Education, another excerpt of which appeared in The New York Times Magazine. She is currently a Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
