Frederick Barthelme is author of nine books, including Moon Deluxe, Second Marriage, Tracer, The Brothers, and the forthcoming novel Painted Desert (Viking, October 1995), from which "The Big Room" was adapted. His short fiction has been published in Esquire, The New Yorker, Epoch, and elsewhere. He directs the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi and edits The Mississippi Review.
