Emily Bernard's personal essays have been reprinted in The Best American Essays, Best African American Essays, and The Best Creative Nonfiction. She teaches African American literature at the University of Vermont. Her most recent book, Carl Vechten and the Harlem Renaissance: A Portrait in Black and White, was published by Yale University Press in February 2012.
