Over the years, Ploughshares has often received longer submissions that were impossible to publish in the print issue due to space restrictions. Coupled with reader demand for longer, compelling stories and essays perfect for one sitting, Ploughshares began the Ploughshares Solos series to offer one of the first outlets for authors of extended prose.
The digital-first series is edited by Ploughshares Editor-in-chief Ladette Randolph and accepts fiction and nonfiction (longer stories, essays, and novellas) from 7,500-20,000 words in length.
Solos are released nine times per year in digital formats available to download for Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and iPad. Each October, the year’s volume is released as a print anthology, called the Ploughshares Solos Omnibus.
We accept submission to Ploughshares Solos between June 1 and January 15. To submit to the Ploughshares Solos series, featuring longer works of fiction and nonfiction, see the guidelines here.
