The 1992 Denise and Mel Cohen Awards
for the outstanding poem, short story, and nonfiction published in Ploughshares Volume 17

Each of these awards carries a prize of $400 and is made possible through the generosity of Denise and Mel Cohen of New Orleans. The Cohen Awards are nominated and judged by the advisory and staff editors of Ploughshares.

Richard McCann was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, and educated at Virginia Commonwealth University, Hollins College, and the University of Iowa, where he received his Ph.D. His fiction and poetry have appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and American Short Fiction, and in Editors' Choice: Best New Short Fiction for 1987, Men on Men 2: Best New Gay Fiction, and Poets for Life: Seventy-six Poets Respond to AIDS. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including a 1991 PEN Syndicated Fiction Award and fellowships from the Fulbright and Rockefeller foundations. He is the author of Dream of the Traveler, a book of poems, and is completing a novel, which will be published by Pantheon. He co-directs the M.F.A. Program in Creative Writing at The American University.
