John Agard was born in Guyana and came to Britain in 1977. He is a poet, performer, and writer for children and younger readers. His many books include six collections from Bloodaxe, most recently Alternative Anthem: Selected Poems (2009), which includes a DVD of his live performances, and Travel Light Travel Dark (2013). He was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry for 2012.
