Rebecca Makkai is the author of the new story collection Music for Wartime (Viking, 2015), of which this story is part; four pieces from the collection were selected for The Best American Short Stories. She has two novels, The Hundred-Year House (Viking, 2014) and The Borrower (Penguin, 2012), and this fall she'll be visiting faculty at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She lives in Chicago.
